Second Seminar of Four Ancient Civilizations Opens in Tehran

TEHRAN The Second Seminar of Four Ancient Civilizations opened here yesterday attended by the Iranian Majlis speaker and parliamentary delegations from Italy, Egypt and Greece.
In his address to the opening session, the Iranian Speaker Mahdi Karrubi underlined that dialogue among civilizations is the most appropriate way to create understanding among modern societies.
He underlined, "President Mohammad Khatami's initiative, approved in the United Nations General Assembly at the threshold of the third millennium, declares the equality of all humans and invites people to respect each other and remove obstacles in the way of their elevation and development." He said if the two sides of dialogue believe in equality, they can settle the problems facing the international community and take steps toward the restoration of global peace, respect for different cultures, and ensuring human rights as well as all-out development.
Referring to the great role played by the Iranian, Italian, Egyptian and Greek civilizations in the formation and development of human civilization, he noted that cooperation between the four ancient countries, as representatives of the ancient civilizations, can be an appropriate example for cooperation and dialogue in the world.
Problems like poverty, social discrimination, drugs, family crisis, crime, migration, and degradation of the environment, which have prevailed in the modern world require a global solution.
The process of globalization will be in conformity with the idea of dialogue among civilizations only when it does not insist on values and principles of a certain civilization, he said, adding that in that case, globalization would mean active participation of all cultures and civilizations. Also addressing the session, the President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies Luciano Violante said that the West should have a broader outlook toward Islam so that it can better understand it, and Islam should also get more familiar with the West.
The dialogue among civilizations takes great strides in creating understanding between different nations and to this effect the world should move away from prejudgment.
The closing session of the seminar entitled," Iran, a Bridge Between Eastern and Western Civilizations" was held Sunday afternoon and presided over by the Foreign Ministry's Educational and Research Department.
